Why Biohack Your iPhone?

With our lives dominated by screens, our exposure to blue light, especially at night, can wreak havoc on our sleep patterns. The blue light emitted by our devices unfortunately suppresses the production of melatonin, the hormone responsible for regulating the sleep-wake cycle, and tricks our brains to think it’s still daytime. This can cause difficulty falling asleep, restless sleep and poor sleep quality.
,
Red light on the other hand is the color on the opposite side of the color spectrum and has a minimal impact on the body's production of melatonin. By biohacking your iPhone, and creating a shortcut that helps turn your screen red, you can minimize this disruption and promote better sleep naturally.

How to Make Your iPhone Red?

  1. Access Accessibility: Scroll down on settings and tap on "Accessibility."

  1. Navigate to Display & Text Size: In the Accessibility menu, locate and tap on "Display & Text Size."

  1. Enable Color Filters: Under Display & Text Size, find the "Color Filters" option and turn it on.

  1. Adjust Color Tint: Tap on "Color Tint" and adjust the intensity to your preference, typically maximizing it to 100%.

  1. Activate Reduce White Point (Optional): While still in Display & Text Size, consider turning on "Reduce White Point" if it's not already activated. This reduces the overall brightness of your screen.

  1. Set Up Accessibility Shortcut: Go back to the main Accessibility menu and select "Accessibility Shortcut" near the bottom.

  1. Select Color Filters: In Accessibility Shortcut, ensure that "Color Filters" is selected by tapping on it. You should see a checkmark indicating your selection.

  1. Triple Click Shortcut: Exit the Settings app and triple-click the power button on your iPhone. This action should activate the color filter, turning your screen red. You can turn the shortcut on any time throughout the day - I typically do so at 9-10 pm, when I’m starting my wind-down routine.

Tips for Better Sleep

Although using red light is a great tool to help build upon your sleep, it’s important to dial in on the basics of sleep before searching for other beneficial sleep methods. Some of these basics include

  • Going to bed and waking up at the same.
  • Having a proper wind-down routine.
  • Not eating within two hours of going to sleep.
  • Keep your room cool, dark and quiet.
