best water filter system

When optimizing my health, I like to dial in on the basics before looking at other health therapies. With water being a fundamental need, I've always been conscious of the quality of water I'm drinking and what I'm putting into my body. An avid fan of the glass-bottled, Mountain Valley Springwater I decided it was finally time to find an alternative and save some money.

As someone with a compromised immune system, I've been advised against under-the-counter water filtration units due to the mold, bacteria, and contaminants that can grow in dark and damp places, and decided to talk to a hydration expert to see what they'd recommend. Upon talking to Tracy Duhs, who spoke highly of the Aquatru as a counter-top water filtration system, I thought I'd take the opportunity to try it myself and share my thoughts.

What Is The Aqua Tru and How Does It Work?

Aqua Tru is a complete water filtration system based on Reverse Osmosis that removes up to 99% of all contaminants from tap water. The Aquatru has three filters enclosed in a little side compartment as well as two larger water tanks. The larger of which is a full-gallon tank that you put the water into, before it is then filtered through into the other tank that acts as a 'secondary reservoir'.

After filtering, all you need to do is press the blue button on the outside of the reservoir to release your now-filtered water. The tank takes 10-15 minutes to filter, is priced starting at a reasonable $450 and filters are said to last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years depending on frequency of use.

Understanding Reverse Osmosis

Reserve Osmosis (RO) is a water purification process that removes ions, molecules, and other particles from water by applying pressure to push it through a semipermeable membrane. The membrane allows water to pass while blocking contaminants such as salts, minerals, bacteria, and other impurities.

The Filters:

reverse osmosis
  • Mechanical -  removes dirt, rust, and sand.
  • Pre/carbon filter -  removes chlorine and chloramines.
  • Reserve Osmosis - removes aluminum, arsenic, asbestos, chromium, copper, mercury, nitrates, pesticides, lead, and prescription drug residue.
  • VOC Carbon Filter - removes toxins while passing through an activated coconut carbon filter to give the water a nice flavor.

Pros and Cons:

✅ Easy to set up and use.

✅ Easy to clean and maintain.

✅ Thorough filtration system.

✅ Aesthetically pleasing.

✅ Affordable Price - saves me purchasing spring water.

✅ Relatively small & countertop space friendly.

✅ Can be packed up and relocated, unlike under the counter water filtration systems.

A smaller tank means the water does need to be added and filtered daily.

Filtering takes 10-15 minutes, which can be inconvenient if you've run out.

Re-mineralizing the water is also inconvenient.

Size Matters: Is It Space-Friendly?

Countertop Reverse Osmosis Water Purifier

If you're concerned about cluttering the countertop, there's no need to worry. The Aqua Tru tank is 35.6cm in height (11in), 30.48cm in width (12in), and 25.6cm in depth (11in). Its sleek over-the-counter designs blend perfectly into my kitchen, without taking up much room, and allow for an easy removal of the water tanks.

The tanks themselves are made from BPA-free and BPS-free plastic and can be removed directly and placed into the refrigerator after filtration or stored in another container if preferred.

Set Up and Maintenance Made Easy

One of my favorite things about the Aqua Tru is how easy the setup process is. You literally just unpack the box, plug in the filters, plug it into the wall, fill it up, and run it a couple of times and you're good to go.

Maintenance is also simple, with the recommendation being to wash and scrub the water reservoirs with a little soap and water once a week.

To Mineralize or Not to Mineralize

One of the most debated topics surrounding reverse osmosis filtration is mineral depletion. Although reserve-osmosis water filters are great at removing the contaminants from water, they also, unfortunately, remove the minerals too. To maintain water quality, it is therefore crucial to re-mineralize the water and add minerals back.

Upon Tracy's recommendation, I've tried both Quinton hypertonic mineral liquid solution, a high-quality seawater liquid mineral supplement you can pour directly into your drink, and QuintEssentials mineralization sachets sea water mineral packs you can again pour directly into your drink or secondary reservoir tank. Additionally, you can buy an alkaline mineral boost VOC filter from Auqa Tru to add healthy minerals back into the water for an additional $20.

It is important to note that these hydration mineral supplements can be expensive and adding some Himalayan or Celtic Sea salt into your drink may also be sufficient. I would however recommend speaking to a healthcare professional before adding new supplements to your daily routine.

Conclusion: Is Aqua Tru For You?

After diving deep into the Aqua True Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration System, here's my recommendation on whether it's worth your investment.

Who's It For?

I believe the Aqua Tru is a great product for someone who would like an affordable hassle-free, high-quality water filtration system and may not have the time or money to invest in a permanent solution. Whether you're a health-conscious individual, a frequent traveler, or someone with specific health concerns, Aqua Tru is likely the solution you've been searching for.

Who's It Not For?

Not every product is a one-size-fits-all solution. I would not recommend this for big families who drink a lot of water as they would have to change and filter the water continuously or for people who aren't interested in counter-top water filters as there are still many other alternatives such as direct delivery of mineral water and under-the-counter filtration systems.
